Top 3 Reasons To Become A Summer Au Pair
Hey Au Pairs!
The summer-time is one of the best times to au pair! It not only gives you something exciting to do over the summer, but it also allows new prospective au pairs to dip their toe into the world of au pairing. Instead of committing for an entire academic year, you can try it out for a summer and then decide if you’re ready to commit for an entire year! I’ve exclusively au paired over the summer in over three different countries and have enjoyed all my experiences!
In no particular order here are the top 3 reasons why you should au pair over the summer:
1.Inexpensive Way To Live Abroad
As a young person it can be expensive to travel abroad, but au pairing makes it a little bit easier! This is because room and board are covered, plus you’re given pocket money that you can use to indulge in whatever your little au pair heart desires! If you’re lucky maybe you’ll find a family who even pays for your travel fare. I was fortunate enough to find two families who covered my flights roundtrip.
As a teenager in French class, I often times envisioned a summer abroad in Paris where I could eat pain au chocolat, walk under the Arc de Triomphe, climb to the top of the Eiffel tower and gaze at the Seine river, and a few years later au pairing allowed my dreams to come true at a economical price!
2.Great CV Booster
Experience working abroad looks great on a resume no matter the profession! It says a lot about you as a person and demonstrates to employers that you’re adaptable, a risk taker and open-minded! These skills can easily be transferred over to any job and can give you an advantage over other candidates!
I hope to one day work within the field of international education as a study abroad advisor or international student advisor, and I am certain that my au pair experience will make me a stand out candidate as it’s given me a plethora of international experience.
3.Immersive Language Experience
If you’re a university student who’s studying a foreign language it’s a great opportunity to go abroad during the summers to immerse yourself in the language you’re studying! If I had known about au pairing when I was a student in university I would have chosen to au pair during the summer break in order to further develop my language skills.
Even if you’re not a university student, but instead just learning a foreign language as a hobby why not spend a summer in the country where the language is spoken so you can engage in some real world language learning?
